Archdeacon Janet Henderson, Richmond Archdeaconry Children’s worker, Graham Richards, and three young people from St. Aidan’s High School were among the 120 young people, 32 bishops and 20 youth workers who met the Archbishops of Canterbury and York at the Regeneration Youth Summit this month.
Donald Mackenzie, Liam Livesley and Alice Hall, Year 12 students took part in creative ideas sessions, prayed for the church and recorded their feedback on film. At the end of the summit a communion service was held and everyone attending signed a pledge to commit themselves to the work of the church and young people.
In his address to the summit the Archbishop of Canterbury encouraged those attending to think about how the church can keep Christians growing: “A living church is one that keeps you growing all through your life, and any answer to the questions we’ve been thinking about today, has to be something that keeps you moving, keeps you growing and that doesn’t leave you in your comfort zone...”
| From the Pledge: “As Bishops and Church leaders we pledge ourselves to find new ways to listen to the voices of young people, and encourage them in their Christian walk. We will work to enable young people's voices to be better heard both within our Diocese and the national Church. We will seek to find new ways to empower young people both in leadership and ministry….” |
The hope is that dioceses will consider the wording of the pledge and begin to discuss it and its recommendations amongst synods, parishes and with young people themselves.
