Nic's Guide to youth work
In recent years a growing number of churches have wanted to appoint a paid youth or children’s worker - but haven't always known where to go for help and guidance. Nic Sheppard has co-written “A guide for churches employing youth and children’s workers”, published by Church House Publishing, which could prove invaluable to churches.
With the late Paul As Diocesan Advisers of many years' experience, Nic and Paul have drawn on a variety of situations to help churches consider everything involved in making an appointment. Taking the principles of best practice, duty of care and good Stewardship as their foundations, the authors have created a guide that helps churches think through what they are expecting from a paid appointment, offer guidance on how to plan for the appointment and give consideration to the ongoing management and development of the worker.
A very helpful Section addresses the importance of job descriptions, contracts and managing the employment process. But care of employees does not stop with appointment, so there is also advice on management, supervision and ongoing training.
While not claiming to give legal advice, the book points churches to the appropriate areas of employment law that will need to be considered.
