A church in the centre of Leeds has received the accolade of best music venue in the city by Leeds' main daily newspaper, the Yorkshire Evening Post. The paper's 'Music Scene' column voted Holy Trinity Church, Boar Lane, as ‘Best Music Venue 2008’ beating the new Carling Academy for its ‘cosy atmosphere and grand, charming, timeworn surrounds’.
For over six years, Holy Trinity Church has been both a place of worship and home to “arts@trinity”, set up by the City of Leeds parish to make use of the building as an arts and music venue. It hosts a continual programme of arts events variously described as ‘unique’ and ‘intriguing’. The large Georgian interior also lends itself acoustically to a new brand of improvised and experimental music which has put Holy Trinity Church firmly on the Leeds music scene map. Last year’s highlights included the cinematic sound of ‘Stars of the Lid’ (aka ‘Forest of Sound’) who created a “truly transcendent experience” through a combination of strings and live electronics, and America’s Micah P. Hinson with his sophisticated, and, some say, gloomy, brand of folk.
Holy Trinity's Arts Development Director, Helen McDonald, said, “We are delighted to be recognised by the Yorkshire Evening Post. 2009 promises more musical delights, reaching new audiences, supporting new artists and developing a further appreciation of a truly magnificent space.”
