The following update comes from
Lindsey Pearson, Yorkshire Regional Manager of Christian Aid.
Churches and individuals throughout the diocese are being urged to continue to support the relief efforts in Haiti by supporting Christian Aid’s disaster relief fund. Official government figures were release showing that the death toll was 112,392 with 196,501 people injured and between 200,000 and 800,000 made homeless.
Despite dropping out of the headlines, Lindsey Pearson, (pictured) Christian Aid’s Yorkshire Regional Manager, says that the needs are still enormous. “By the time most people read this, Haiti will probably be out of the main news”, she said. “Nevertheless, funds will still be needed for the rebuilding of Haiti. Christian Aid has been supporting partners in Haiti for many years and we will continue to work with them until the situation improves – not just this earthquake but the underlying poverty which blights the lives of most Haitians.”
Christian Aid is responding to the emergency in Haiti by working with its long-standing partners in the country. “Our partners have access to and close ties with communities and community leaders in the areas where they normally operate, thus ensuring a well targeted distribution of supplies”, says Lindsey Pearson. At present Christian Aid is working through 13 local organisations in Haiti, and they are sourcing and distributing emergency relief to more than 15,000 people in eight different locations. Lindsey adds, “Because we have this network of partners working with their communities, we are well placed to respond when an emergency happens. “
Lindsey says the appeal has produced a big response. “In the Christian Aid office here in Leeds we have received many donations – more than in any other appeal – from churches and individuals. The situation has touched people's hearts, and we are pleased and grateful that people are trusting us to use their donations in the best way.”
You can continue to send donations to Christian Aid, Oxford Chambers, Oxford Place, Leeds LS1 3AX, and Gift Aid envelopes can be provided – call (0113) 2444764 or email leeds@christian-aid.org

A prayer for Haiti
Loving God of creation,
at this time of devastation
we hold before you the people of Haiti.
When the damage is unimaginable,
and the suffering seems overwhelming,
remind us that every person affected
is loved, honoured and precious in your sight.
We remember all those who have been hurt;
all who have lost their homes, livelihoods and loved ones.
Work through us to bring healing
to broken and distorted lives,
peace to those who have been thrown into despair,
light to those in darkness,
and hope to those who fear.
We ask this in the name of Jesus
in whom all life and grace is found
