A holiday club, which for several years has been attracting children from the Bilton area of Harrogate during the Easter holidays, has been breaking more records this April. More than 140 primary school children and 75 teenagers have been taking part in this year’s ‘Smelly Yellow Welly’ club at St John’s Bilton.
Nearly fifty adult leaders have also been involved in helping run the club which each weekday morning has been packed with group activities, ear-splitting games, drama, and music. The club has proved so popular that some of the group activities have been held nearby in the local Richard Taylor Primary School.
Organisers said they were delighted by the numbers attending this year. “The club has always been popular” said one, “but I don’t think we have ever seen quite so many children here before.”
Another leader, Jenny Caldwell said that she was impressed by the number of young people who had come to help. “What is really good are the number of teenage helpers” she said. “Many are church members, but others have come from other churches and particularly from St Aidan’s Church High School.”
