Alastair Thompson

Chair of the Diocesan Board of Finance

Alastair Thompson

It is with deep regret that we report the sudden death of Alastair Thompson in the early hours of January 12th. Alastair will be greatly missed by his many friends and colleagues in the diocese, and our prayers are with his wife and family at this sad time.

Alastair's funeral will take place at 12.30pm on Wednesday 25th January at St. Giles' Bramhope.

Tributes to Alastair have already been coming into the office. Bishop John Packer has spoken of ‘the immense amount Alastair has given to the diocese and to encouraging us in our stewardship and care of money – an expression of his own Christianity'.

Alastair served faithfully on many committees and was a Lay Canon of the Cathedral. Dean Keith Jukes said, we 'give thanks for the huge contribution that Alastair has made both within our Cathedral Community and more widely in the Diocese. He will leave a huge gap but we must be thankful for that part of his life and skill that we have all been privileged to receive and share.  May his enthusiasm, faith and inspiration inspire us all as we go forward.'

Dr Sue Proctor, Diocesan Secretary, said, "Alastair was a joy to work with and it is with deep sadness that the staff in the Diocesan office learnt of his passing yesterday. Our heartfelt sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time.  We are grateful as a diocese to have had the blessing of his wisdom, support, practical guidance and sense of fun in relation to our work on budget planning and management. He was a well respected and much loved colleague and will be sorely missed."
